In the last May (Saturday, May 25th, 2019), NOA conducted its live performance at theLive Spot Rag in Kyoto, as the first time outside of the Kanto area of Japan. They hadanother live at Silver Elephant, Tokyo on September 28, 2019 as the celebration of itslive performance in Kansai area of Japan first time, with the same set list they playedin Kyoto. This is the review of that live.

On the stage of Silver Elephant, from the left to the right, Takesako(drums andpercussion), Sakurai(Bass), Mitoma(Guitar) and Watanabe(Keyboards and Vocal) werepositioned. The drums and percussions for Takesako excluded electric instruments thistime(still his instruments setup were rather huge).

Mitoma engaged their live with his guitar solo which started calm improvisation byarpeggio, followed by “Tri-Logic”, the title number of their 1st original album, as theintroduction of the world of NOA sound. Another 4 pieces of music which had not beenincluded in the previous released albums followed.

As if playing fool on Seven / Eight beat, “The Day after Tomorrow is Yesterday” wasplayed as the top tune of those 4 pieces.

“The Day after Tomorrow is Yesterday” had several solo portion by Guitar andKeyboard which made the tune very interactive as one of the best part of ProgressiveJazz Rock.

2nd tune of those 4 pieces, “The Menagerie” was played with medium tempo speed onFour / Four beat through ad-lib on crisp code changing – personally reminded somesound of progressive rock band “CAMEL”.

“Dagger of the Mind”, 3rd tune of those 4 pieces presented with ad-lib by all members, had a section as if played by progressive jazz rock band “BRUFORD” – however alsoreminded “CAMEL” to me.

Stillness of the “NOA” sound were presented by “The Way to Eden”, a ballad tunefeaturing bass solo by Sakurai and the last one of those 4 pieces.

After playing relatively new 4 pieces, “Jupiter and Lucifer” and “CryogenicCombination”, 2 tunes from 1st album “Tri-Logic” were played connected by shortimprovisation, which made those 2 tunes as if one music with both smooth and darktaste – very attractive development gradually accelerated by aggressive guitar solopresented by Mitoma.

The last tune of 1st set was “Journey to Babel” from compilation album “CanterburyEdge” released in Japan around 1990. Although it had Japanese lyrics when originallyreleased, it was played with English lyrics this time. Watanabe took the vocal part.

After the short brake, 2nd set were started with improvisation by Guitar and Bass, continuously followed by “Dr. McCoy” which was included in 1st album, thougharrangement were hugely altered from the recorded version. Main theme and guitarsolo were played with bless controller by Mitoma, interacted with Keyboard solo byWatanabe while keeping their harmony, somewhat like once presented by Jan Hammerand Jeff Beck.

The next tune was “(its nice to) See You Again”, announced as one of those piecesplanned to make their 3rd album. The impressive motif as theme would be jumping withchord changes from time to time sounded stimulus and interesting.

After the brief explanation by Takesako, all tunes included in their 2nd album “IfTomorrow Comes” were played with the same sequence in the album withoutinterruption, the highlight of this live performance.

They played in this way (played all tunes with the same sequence in the 2nd album)last year before the album released. Over a year after released, audiences may havegrown accustomed to the sound of their 2nd album, which would change thecircumstances of the concert this time.

The same could be said for players – having long enough time to digest their own soundwith wider and deeper understanding, would make them better performer themselves, and lead to play the whole album again.

This time, they played their 2nd album tunes straightly as originally composed –without any gimmick/fun which were somewhat hired in the album recording. Thatbeen said, their performance of the day made each tune’s character clearer and veryattractive.

Although I could imagine that each member of NOA holds both successful and theopposite memory from their past live performance, very much matured play with selfconfidence were presented.

Answering the request for encore, “The Six Sense”, which shall also be included their3rd album, although sounded very familiar because it has very impressive motif andplayed almost of all recent their live, was played. Again I reminded the sound of“CAMEL” because of its interactive ad-liv between Guitar and Keyboard.

Please allow me to use the name of famous band and/or musicians, as the tool toexplain the sound by texts, although I understand it would not be suitable.

What apparent to me through the live performance this time, is that NOA have beenin love with Progressive (Jazz) Rock. Hope they will keep their momentum on theactivity after restart in 2016 for long time.
